The roof covered in solar panels

CHESHIRE - With a quarter of his roof covered in solar panels, Bob Giddings loves sunny days. By 3 p.m. Tuesday, for instance, the array had generated 13.8 kilowatt hours of electricity - more than his house would use that day.

Last month Giddings bought a $20,000 solar panel array, which he expects will generate 3,700 kilowatt hours per year. His house runs on a lean 300 kilowatt hours per month - compared to the state average of 700 kilowatts - so Giddings expects to pay nothing to Connecticut Light & Power for electricity.

"That should be all of the electricity we use," he said of his solar array.

Giddings is one of an increasing number who are using solar power to lower their electric bills, although the payback time on such investments is usually long.

Eight solar panel rebates have been given out in Cheshire since 2008, along with seven in Southington and one in Meriden, according to the state Clean Energy Fund.
